I was worried when Eagles were fighting for more goals after scoring four, Governor Udom confesses

Akwa Ibom State Governor Mr. Udom Emmanuel being introduced to Super Eagles technical officials by NFF President Amaju Pinnick. He is happy with the team’s performance against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun in Uyo last Friday

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel at the weekend confessed that he was worried when the Super Eagles scored four goals against Cameroun and were still fighting for more goals.

The governor had before the game promised to give the Super Eagles $10, 000 for each goal they scored against Cameroun in Uyo on Friday and the boys responded by putting four into the Indomitable Lions net. But that feat means Akwa Ibom has to pay the Super Eagles $40, 000. The governor had earlier given the Eagles the $30, 000 they earned from the 3-1 defeat of Algeria in the second matchday of the qualifying series.

Speaking during a reception for the Super Eagles on Saturday, Governor Emmanuel congratulating the team for the joy they have been bringing to the country during the qualifiers, saying that they have proved that good organisation and hard work are keys to success.

“I must confess that I was no longer comfortable when the goals started pumping in. I did a mental calculation and realised the implication of your splendid performance. But that is the kind of problem we like to have. We will continue to support the team until victory is achieved. “

The Akwa Ibom governor is not the only patriot that has keyed into the Super Eagles successful run in the qualifiers.

On Sunday aboard the Arik Air flight to Yaounde, a businessman, Aka Udofia pledged to give the Super Eagles the sum of $20,000 for every goal scored in yesterday’s reverse fixture against Cameroon.

Addressing the players and other members of the Nigerian delegation, Udofia said: “I am a very good friend of the NFF President, Mr. Amaju Pinnick, and I am happy that I am here in time to see you guys before take –off for Yaounde.

“I watched the game against the Cameroonians here in Uyo on Friday and I am sure you have the ability to conquer them again in their own territory. I promise to reward you with $20,000 for every goal scored in Yaounde,” Udofia announced to the applause of players and officials.
