Fire destroys goods worth millions of Naira in Orita-Aperin Market
The Babaloja of the market, Abiodun Hammed, said: “The fire started by midnight on Friday. We immediately called on Oyo State Fire Service, but unfortunately, when they got here, the truck was not functioning. We resolved to self-help by trying to put out the fire ourselves…”
Hammed said some shop owners just brought in new wares, which made the total value affected by the fire to be high.
He, however, called on the Oyo State government to come to their aid, saying the loss was too much for the victims to bear. One of the victim, Latifat Adegbola appealed to the state government to assist them financially, lamenting that they bought the goods with loan facilities.
“All my goods have been consumed by the fire and the remaining ones are useless. We are calling on the government to come to our aid, “ Adegbola cried.
A pepper and onion seller, Mariam Oladepo, who said she lost goods worth N100,000, said nothing remained for her and her children to feed on.
