Grace is supernatural
What Is Grace?
One definition of grace is, “An unmerited favour and the love of God for man.” Another definition says grace is, “God’s Riches at Christ’s Expense.” These definitions show us that grace is supernatural. It is the supernatural love of God for man. God loves us, even when we don’t deserve it or at Christ’s expense. This was why He sent Jesus to the cross to die for us. The truth is that the more you think about grace, the more you realise that God’s grace is incomprehensible. We don’t deserve it; it is so generous and overwhelming! John Newton, the hymn writer says grace is so amazing.
For me, grace means God’s willingness to help man, whenever he is in need. The other day, I meditated on what Paul said to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:22, and which he repeated in Galatians 6:18, “Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.” Note that the ‘spirit’ referred to here is written with a small ‘s’, that means, our own spirit. Then I thought within me, so God’s grace extends to my spirit. Our spirits need grace because that is where we are re-created or renewed by the Holy Spirit to be born again.
Our spirit needs grace because it is the fountainhead of our faith. “Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts.” (Prov.4: 23). On the other hand, when our spirit is troubled, fear, anxiety, discouragement, depression and doubt would set in. These are uncertain times, when the soul and spirit could be severely troubled by happenings around us. Paul says our spirit can receive grace, when we are troubled. Is your spirit or soul troubled by anything? Then, may you receive God’s grace; may you be revived in your inner man.
Paul, An Apostle Of Grace
If you want to know how supernatural the grace of God is, take a look at Apostle Paul. He was a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violently arrogant man, yet he obtained mercy and God’s grace. Who could have done that but God alone! “Although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man, but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus” (1Tim.1: 13, 14).
Paul was not only saved by grace, but he was also empowered by grace to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ. “To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ (Eph.3:8). Every aspect of Paul’s life, his ministry and achievement, he attributes to grace. “But by the grace of God, I am what I am and his grace toward me was not in vain, but I laboured more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me (1 Cor.15: 10).
Beneficiaries Of His Supernatural Grace
Like Paul, we are also beneficiaries of God’s supernatural grace. By the gift of grace, we are saved (Eph.2:8); we are forgiven by His grace (Titus 2:11-14); by grace, God now loves us unconditionally (Rom.8: 35); we are justified by grace (Titus 3:7); we are lifted by grace (James 4:6); for by grace we stand (Rom.5: 2); and we daily live and grow by His grace (2 Peter 3:18). All we are, and everything we own, we owe to His grace. Indeed, God’s grace is so amazing! Contact: firstname.lastname@example.org
