ASABA, the capital city of Delta State would from Thursday 23 to Tuesday 28, be lighted up with community art. With Philips Nzekwe, as convener, the four-day event, which holds at Nelrose Hotel Asaba would feature workshop and exhibition that will teach participants, mostly primary and secondary school students, how to turn waste to wealth.

Maja-Pearce, a professional on converting waste to wealth and recycling of disposable materials would be part of the facilitators.

She aims to use the event to kick-start the promotion of arts at the grassroots and to inculcate the appreciation of art at the primary and secondary levels of education in the state. According to Nzekwe, “participants are going to acquire skills that will not only make them become self-employed or entrepreneurs, but also to use local materials to make beauty objects.

We have designed the activities to engage the community through close interactive participation of parents.” Calling on parents and guardians to allow their children to participate in the event, Mr. Victor Olaleye, one of the facilitators, said, “the workshop aims at engaging the community with art through a do-it-your-self approach.

The activities include community photography, mural/graffitti, waste recycling, fashion and print art.” The workshop would round off on Tuesday 28, with an exhibition, which would be curated by Lagos-based curator/photographer, Mr Adetunji Akinyemi.
